Actos, a popular medication given to patients who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, may come with significant risks for patients. As more stories emerge about these issues from patients who have taken it, manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceuticals is facing an increasing number of lawsuits from those who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

What is Actos?

Actos is an oral medication give to Type 2 diabetes patients and usually is given in a dosage of 15 or 30 mg once per day with a maximum recommended dose of 45 mg per day. Patients often realize that there may be minor side effects associated with a drug, but serious concerns have been raised by patients and as a result of medical studies in which there has been a connection between usage of Actos and bladder cancer.

Unfortunately, a growing number of bladder cancer lawsuits are emerging in Canada and across the United States against drug manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceuticals. The drug has recently been linked to a higher risk of bladder cancer. It is designed to treat Type 2 diabetes.

The drug manufacturer is already facing hundreds of various bladder cancer lawsuits in the United States. These lawsuits argue that the medication may have triggered the disease and that the manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, failed to warn doctors and patients of the risk prior to the medication being prescribed.

Does Actos Cause Bladder Cancer?

If you or someone you know has taken Actos and has later been diagnosed with bladder cancer, you may be entitled to recover compensation via an Actos lawsuit. If you develop any of the following bladder cancer symptoms, you need to consult with your medical professional as soon as possible and consider speaking with a defective drug lawyer. These symptoms include blood in the urine, red-tinted urine, lower abdominal or back pain, pain during urination or the urgent need to urinate. Those individuals who have been affected by Actos may need to get help from an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Do not hesitate to get the help you need.

Lawsuits filed by people who have been injured by Actos outline several key issues for the arguments including willfully concealing safety issues with the drug and failing to warn the public and doctors about side effects. Other allegations in the lawsuit include claims that the manufacturer failed to properly test the medication, that it manufactured an unsafe product, that it provided misleading information to the public, that it concealed research and testing data from the public, and that the manufacturers knew about the dangers of the product but sold it anyways.

Those individuals who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer or suffered other devastating side effects associated with the medication, that they were not warned about, could be able to recover compensation including medical bills, lost income, loss of consortium, pain and suffering, or funeral expenses. There are a number of different serious side effects associated with Actos including congestive heart failure and potentially bladder cancer.

In 2002, Actos was identified to increase the risk of congestive heart failure in patients. Two clinical studies conducted by the manufacturer in 2005 identified that there were a higher percentage of patients afflicted with bladder cancer in those taking Actos as opposed to another drug. A French study in 2011 identified higher bladder cancer risk for patients taking Actos and it was therefore pulled off the market in France. Germany followed by recommending that Actos not be used with new patients.

In 2015, approximately 9,000 claims were settled in the United States in one of the biggest pharmaceutical settlements in the country. If you or someone you know has been injured after taking this Type 2 diabetes drug, you need to consult with an experienced attorney as soon as possible. You may be able to recover compensation for the injuries you have sustained. No patient expects to be suffering the consequences of a drug manufacturerโ€™s failure to warn about devastating side effects but unfortunately this happens all too frequently. Donโ€™t wait to get the help you need when you find yourself in this situation.

Actos Lawsuits

Lawsuits in the U.S. allege that the manufacturer compromised patient safety by failing to warn doctors or patients about the risks of the drug. Although the manufacturer claims they marketed the medication properly and that any dangers are outweighed by the benefits, more than 9,000 lawsuits brought forth by patients have already been settled in the U.S. for billions of dollars. Plaintiffs in those lawsuits argue that they or a family member was diagnosed with bladder cancer after using Actos on a long-term basis.

A U.S. federal jury also hit Takeda with a punitive damages verdict of $9 billion U.S. This was the first case that went to trial in multidistrict litigation and it was the seventh-biggest punitive damages award in U.S. history at the time. Legal cases are still unfolding and anyone who may have grounds for a claim is encouraged to come forward and speak with an attorney sooner rather than later about a potential case. While there is nothing that can help undo the damage of a bladder cancer diagnosis, coming forward with a legal claim may prevent others from suffering a similar fate and it might also empower victims to hold the drug maker responsible.
