I know when we all have projects to do around the house the first thing we are always thinking is how much will it cost. A house is an inevitable money pit we all pay into. Not a day goes by when something goes wrong and you are stuck.

Just the other day both kids had a stomach bug, (so you can imagine my sheets) and that is exactly when the washer/dryer decided to stop working. Right now, I am fixing my front stairs that seemed to have fallen apart over the summer.

The problem is that in that haste, you do not often make the wisest decisions as to who should complete the project. Or alternatively you look for such a great deal, that you accept the cheapest quote. We often forget to ask the most important question, do you have insurance? If you want to insure your house is well taken care of ensure that whoever works there is ensured and bonded.

Getting just anyone to do the work means that if the work is negligently done and someone is hurt, you could be solely on the hook. Having an insured company complete the job means that if there are mistakes, then you have coverage for the consequences.

I admit this is not something we think about before we hire someone, whether it’s a contractor, pest control or pool maintenance, but you need to know that from the get go. Even for things like snow removal. I will give you an example; lets say you hire a company to do the snow removal. That company fails to salt your driveway and someone is hurt. Theoretically, if you are sued the liability can shift to snow removal company. If they do not have insurance, I assure you the injured person is going after you.

Protect yourself and ensure that everyone is covered in case of an accident.
