School Safety With Daniel Diamond

Every day, millions of children in Ontario are dropped off at their schools and left in the hands of their teachers, principals and school administrators. They spend a quarter of their young lives in the hands of non-parental supervising figures. While education is certainly the primary aim of any school, safety should not be second fiddle.

Keeping Safe from Slip & Fall Accidents

A school (and the school board, vicariously), may be found liable for negligence if a child is injured while on school property. Schools should take the following steps to avoid potential liability:

To avoid slip & fall accidents on wet floors, schools should have a written, strictly enforced policy for the cleaning staff to place “wet floor” signs near freshly mopped floors, and to patrol the hallways regularly to monitor for potential hazards; To avoid exterior slip & fall accidents on ice, schools should have a written, strictly enforced policy for snow and ice removal and the application of salt and sand; To avoid bullying incidents, schools should have bullying-prevention policies in place and should educate all staff in bullying prevention, and to look out for and respond to signs of bullying appropriately; To avoid motor vehicle accidents in their parking lots, schools should have crossing guards and school employees to guide traffic through areas that are typically densely packed with children after the school bell rings.
