The Importance of Wearing a Helmet

#AskDanielDiamond

The importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle cannot be overstated. While it may not be able to reduce the likelihood of an accident, helmets certainly reduce the severity of the injuries that can be sustained in an accident.

As a personal injury lawyer, I see the effect of helmets first-hand. The accident victims who come through our door after an accident in which they were wearing a helmet tend to have injuries that are far less debilitating and catastrophic than those who were no wearing a helmet.

The role of helmets is to absorb the impact from a hard surface that would otherwise be transmitted directly into one’s skull. Without a helmet, a catastrophic brain injury is significantly more likely to result. Many studies over the past few decades have concluded that helmet use can reduce a head-injury risk by 85%. For every 100 accidents, that’s 85 people whose lives can be saved by wearing a helmet. Many individuals choose not to wear a helmet because they aren’t attractive or aren’t comfortable. After an accident, these same people invariably regret that they hadn’t traded comfort and aesthetics for safety.

You’ve only got one brain. Do your best to protect it at all costs.
