Personal Injury with a Heart

Sandra Zisckind

I am so happy to congratulate my brother Isaac Zickind on his “Lawyers Can’t Jump” event. Basically a bunch of out of shape lawyers, (myself included) got together to play basketball and raise money for Sick Kids hospital. Isaac and two other lawyers from two other firms raised over $20,000.00 for the Leukemia ward of Sick Kids. Isaac’s nephew was diagnosed with Leukemia. He was actually born with it. The people at the hospital were so wonderful he wanted to give back.

Diamond and Diamond is also a yearly co-chair for an Autism Speaks event called “Under the Big Top”. That event raises approximately $100,000.00 every year for that charity.

What is my point (except to pat us on the back), simple. Almost all insurance law firms I know and deal with do a lot of charitable work with organizations where this nothing to gain except doing well for the community. Despite the old adage of ambulance chasing and the perception of lawyers as self-interested hawks, we all know it is our civic duty to give back to the communities where we live and work.

I had a wonderful client this week say to me that I changed her perception of personal injury lawyers. I am hoping to change everyone’s perception, which is not easy considering we usually win most despised along with politicians and tax auditors. However, given the events this week, maybe we moved up a notch. Thanks Mayor Ford.
